内容摘要:
Leisure in modern society is a global phenomenon and is intricately related to the modern processes of globalization – the movement of people, ideas and capital across borders. As a consequence of tremendous social and economic transformations the country has undergone in recent years, a new leisure culture appears to be burgeoning in contemporary Chinese society. In a new world-space of cultural production and representation, the emerging leisure culture is grounded in people‘s everyday life with mixing realities. It involves a dynamic exchanging process between the global and the local and promises exciting new life experiences with much wider assortments of leisure and recreation opportunities. At the same time, new pressures of the global market economy and the global popular culture, as manifested in the arising leisure consumerism in Chinese cities, turn into a dominant feature of contemporary social experiences. Against this background, this study focuses on the subjective imagination of the new Chinese urban leisure and the ways globalization enters everyday life experiences of Chinese urban residents. Tracing back to its traditional cultural roots, the progressive construction of a new concept of leisure and leisure practices in the shifting trans-cultural flows and connections between China and the West is tackled against the backdrop of globalization. Drawing insights from existing literature, this study endeavors to further understanding on leisure in the concrete, temporal-historical situations of contemporary China through discussions on the issues of how people make sense of globalization in the course of their everyday leisure routines and how the leisure reality entering the subjective processes of social reality construction in the urban setting of China.
